Carers Card Scheme - information for providers

Could your business help and support local carers by offering them deals, special offers or discounts? Do you already have an existing offer for carers, that may benefit from some added publicity? If so, this scheme could have mutual benefits for both your business and carers across County Durham and Darlington.

Durham County Council, in conjunction with NHS County Durham and Darlington, and Darlington Borough Council launched the Carers Card Scheme, which will operate across the county and Darlington from October 2012.

The aim of the scheme is to provide a variety of essential goods and services at discounted prices, or with added value or benefit, specifically for bona-fide unpaid carers within the County Durham and Darlington areas.

For example:

  • a carers discount off all items
  • a carers discount off a specific range of items
  • free item(s) when a carer spends a certain amount
  • interest free credit for carers on packages
  • instalment plans for carers
  • 2 for 1 or similar for carers
  • free home visits/sittings for carers
  • free delivery within a given radius
  • any other type of long lasting discounted or added value promotion for carers.

Carers have told us the types of goods and services most important to them and in response we are contacting a variety of established local organisations who might welcome the opportunity of becoming involved with the scheme.

A brochure/catalogue of participating businesses has been produced and will be distributed to around 10,000 known carers. The information will also be shared through this website.

Unpaid carers will be issued, free of charge, with a scheme membership card for presentation at point of purchase and as a participating provider for the scheme.

If you would like to participate in the Carers Card Scheme, please download and complete the Carers Card Application Form (PDF, 17kb)

Completed application forms should be returned to:

If there is anything you would like to discuss about the operation of the Carers Card Scheme; or have any helpful comments or ideas about its operation, please contact us.

We hope you will see this scheme as an exciting opportunity not only to add a loyal group of new customers to your customer base, but also as an opportunity to reward, in some way, our unpaid carers for their invaluable support for the people they care for.
